Virginia Keating is a self- taught artist who creates mixed media assemblages and sculptures. In 2021, "Vee" was named by South Coast Almanac as one of the Top Ten Most Unusual Artists in the Southcoast, and is humble and grateful for that recognition.
Growing up in a home on Mount Hope Bay, she always found joy in nature, and today uses foraged, found and repurposed treasures in her artwork.
She has spread her wings in the last two years, learning to use stained glass, Italian Smalti, semi-precious minerals and stone in order to create meditation boards and outdoor garden sculptures.
She is on a mission to teach children especially how important it is to spend time outside. Spending time in nature is not only imperative for mental health, but encourages them to learn about our native plants and creatures. She is hoping these sojourns will have a huge impact on how children view their futures on our beautiful planet.
She encourages people of all ages to have fun hiking and foraging, and then returning home to create with what was collected. She is applying for a grant to have a space designated for just this purpose.
This year she's also incorporating a variety of plastics into her work that she's collected on beaches, and repurposing broken and discarded or obsolete items that would typically end up in a landfill.
She's looking forward to the Open Studio Tour this year, and can't wait to share her vision with you.
