Dot Bergen is an abstract encaustic artist inspired by science and nature. Formally trained as a scientist, she leverages her advanced degrees in Invertebrate Zoology and Marine Ecology to inform her point of view. The majority of her work references natural phenomena such as fossilization, mineralization, growth, cellular movement and the natural world. Encaustics is the art of painting with molten beeswax and resin. She often incorporates natural fibers such as wool, silk, cotton and paper into her pieces giving them a sculptural look. Dot received a BS in Biology from the University of Massachusetts, an MS in Marine Ecology from San Diego State University, and a PhD in Invertebrate Zoology from University of New Hampshire. Her work has been exhibited in Museums and Galleries including The Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA; Spring Bull Gallery, Newport, RI; Bristol Art Museum, Bristol, RI; Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA; Imago Gallery, Warren, RI and Dee Dee Shattuck Gallery, Westport, MA. Her studio/gallery is located in Little Compton, RI.
